Tehran, May 14 (IANS/RIA Novosti) An Iranian government spokesman has dismissed a media report that claimed President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad could face 74 lashes for breaking the country's election rules. A British daily reported that Iran's Guardian Council, a constitutional watchdog run by senior clerics, would seek possible charges against the president, after he accompanied his chief of staff Esfandiar Rahim Mashaei when Mashaei registered as a candidate for Iran's June 14 presidential election.

Nine held in Turkey over deadly bombings
Ankara, May 13 (IANS) Nine Turks have been arrested over Saturday's deadly bombings in a town near the border with Syria, Turkish deputy prime minister Besir Atalay said Sunday. The twin car bombings killed as many as 46 people and injured over 100 in Reyhanli town, where thousands of Syrian refugees have taken shelter, Xinhua reported. Turkish interior minister Muammer Guler said one of the nine suspects was the mastermind of the attack.

40 killed, 100 injured in Turkey blasts
Ankara, May 12 (IANS/RIA Novosti) As many as 40 people were killed and over 100 injured, in two blasts that occurred a Turkish town of Reyhanli, near Syrian border Saturday, the government said. Five suspects, three of them Syrian nationals, have been detained in connection with the blasts, Turkey's NTV reported. The attack occurred when two cars exploded in front of the municipality building and the post office in the southern province of Hatay, a few kilometres from the main border crossing into Syria, said Turkey's interior minister Muammer Guler.

Iran’s Persepolis coach resigns after poor results
Tehran, May 10 (IANS) The head coach of Iran's Persepolis soccer team Yahya Golmohammadi stepped down after poor results in the professional football league. Persepolis also lost to Sepahan in the final match of Iran's Hazfi Cup earlier this week and could not qualify for 2014 AFC League competitions, reports Xinhua. The 42-year-old coach had replaced Portuguese coach Manuel Jose last December.
