
Kumarakom is a popular tourist destination in Kottayam district. Well known for its backwaters, Bird Sanctuary, house boats etc. has grown in fame. Located on the banks of Vembanadu Lake, offers a lot of breathtaking sights amongst palm trees bordering its banks. The highlight of Kumarakom is its special cusine of fish baked in banana leaves. The mangroves offer wonderful nesting grounds for a number of migratory birds and is a special sight during the migratory season.
Accommodation is provided by a large number of resort that offer a large variety of entertainment as well. Ayurvedic massage, boating, fishing, canoeing etc are some. Some resorts also offer water skiing and wind sailing. A major attraction of Kumarakom is the Snake boat race that is held annually in association with the harvest festival of Kerala Onam which is usually in the months of August or September.
Pathiramanal Island is another attraction of Kumarakom. This enchanting island covers an area of 10 acres and is accessible only by boat. The island is home to a number of migratory birds that come to Kumarakom every year. The best time to watch these birds is during the months of November to February.
Houseboat stays are another special feature of the place. The old Kettuvaloms which were mainly used for transportation of goods have now been given a facelift by putting in modern amenities like bedrooms, modern toilets, living quarters and a kitchen. Trips on the houseboat vary from hourly charges to overnight stay packages inclusive of food prepared on the boat.
