Women’s panel should reflect on its purpose: Aruna Roy

New Delhi, Aug 23 (IANS) The women's rights apex body, National Commission for Women (NCW), needs to reflect on its role and work on gender-based issues, National Advisory Council member Aruna Roy said here Thursday. "All the commissions in India, from the point of view of why they exist, are not performing well. The NCW has also failed to address issues from a gender-sensitive perspective," Roy said. "NCW needs some serious evaluation and thinking on what it is doing for women's issues in India," Roy added. The social activist was speaking at the launch of a campaign for women by the National Federation of Indian Women (NIFW). "They (NCW) have to go beyond political affiliation and think of any incident from the perspective of violation of civil rights, human rights and gender rights," Roy, who is president of NFIW, said. The NFIW is all set to launch a mass campaign on violence against women and malnourishment on Sep 14 and Oct 2. The campaign includes the demand for food as a fundamental right and stricter laws to deal with crimes against women. As part of the campaign, the network of women, spread across 26 states, will organise protests and human chains outside central government and state offices in different parts of the country.
