Maharashtra, GE to modernise rural health care

Mumbai, May 17 (IANS) Maharashtra has initiated steps to modernise its rural healthcare network with a tie-up with an international consortium, an official said here Friday. The state health department has joined hands with a Wipro GE Healthcare-led consortium which will invest in advanced diagnostic imaging facilities worth Rs.1.50 billion over the next 10 years.

Maharashtra generates highest amount of hazardous waste

New Delhi, May 17 (IANS) India generates 7.9 million tonnes of hazardous waste every year with the highest amount generated by Maharashtra, the environment ministry said Friday. As per the information furnished by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), Maharashtra (22.84 percent), Gujarat (22.68 percent) and Andhra Pradesh (13.75 percent) are the top three hazardous waste generating states in the country followed by Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. These seven states together are generating about 82 percent of the country's total hazardous wastes.

Thousands court arrest in Mumbai, Maharashtra against new tax

Mumbai, May 16 (IANS) Thousands of traders in Mumbai and other parts of Maharashtra, along with prominent state politicians, courted arrest Thursday demanding scrapping of the new Local Body Tax (LBT), officials said. The 'jail bharo' agitation was taken up simultaneously in Mumbai and eight other districts of the state with traders courting arrest and shouting anti-LBT slogans.
