‘Trailblazer’ ‘Sri’ Srinivasan creates history as top US judge
Washington, May 24 (IANS) Chandigarh-born "trailblazer" Indian-American legal luminary Srikanth 'Sri' Srinivasan has made history with the US Senate unanimously confirming him as the first South Asian judge on the powerful appeals court for the American capital. Srinivasan, 46, currently principal deputy solicitor general of the US, was Thursday confirmed by the Senate by a 97 to 0 vote, as a judge on the US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, often called the nation's second-highest court. "Pleased" at the unanimous confirmation of his nominee "the first one to this important court in seven years," President Barack Obama said "Sri is a trailblazer who personifies the best of America." "Born in Chandigarh, India, and raised in Lawrence, Kansas, Sri spent nearly two decades as an extraordinary litigator before serving" in his current job, Obama noted predicting, "Now he will serve with distinction on the federal bench." "Sri will in fact be the first South Asian American to serve as a circuit court judge in our history," he said as he pressed the Senate to act quickly to fill the three remaining vacancies on the appeals court "as well as other vacancies across the country".
Bid to smuggle African ivory foiled in Dubai
Dubai, May 24 (IANS/WAM) Dubai Customs has foiled a bid to smuggle 259 pieces of ivory that arrived from Africa at its Jebel Ali Customs Centre. The ivory items fall under the endangered fauna and flora category, in which international trade is prohibited by the CITES Convention. Dubai Customs inspectors seized the shipment "using advanced inspection techniques", an official said.

25 killed, 30 injured in suicide attacks in Niger
Niamey, May 23 (IANS) At least 25 people were killed and 30 got injured after two suicide bomb attacks Thursday at a military base and a plant run by French nuclear giant Areva in northern Niger, reported Xinhua. A total of 20 Nigerien soldiers and 5 assailants died in twin suicide attacks against a military barracks in Agadez, the main town in northern Niger, and another one at a factory owned by Somair, a subsidiary of the French group Areva in Arlit in the same region. The attacks were announced Thursday morning by Niger's National Defence Minister Karidjo Mahamadou who issued a press statement.
Daimler India to start exports of FUSO trucks from June
Chennai, May 23 (IANS) German automobile major Daimler AG will start exports of FUSO range of trucks - belonging to Japanese Mitsubishi FUSO Truck and Bus Corporation (MFTBC) - to Sri Lanka out of its plant near here from June, said a senior official near here Thursday. Daimler India Commercial Vehicles Pvt Ltd, the Indian subsidiary of German automobile maker Daimler AG, Thursday rolled out FUSO range of trucks from its plant near here to be launched in 15 markets in Asia and Africa.
