Malayalam Movies of 2011: One-Timers

I want to bring five Malayalam movies to your notice. These movies of 2011 sounded promising when I saw the trailers. But the full length movies seemed jaded in comparison. I will not say that they were bad; each one of them had some highlights. But I do feel that the following film films missed the mark.

Rathinirvedam

Hoping for a success with a remake of 70’s sizzler? Not quite the right mix. The enamoured man-child was downright irritating. Shwetha Menon did what she did all through her film stints in Bollywood in the 90’s. Skin, skin, skin. I absolutely loved Shreya Ghoshal’s playback singing in this movie, by the way.

Urumi

Once again, great music. Shreya rocks! The cinematography was excellent. How could this movie go wrong when it came from a camp of rockstars? I don’t know. Something was missing, and I still cannot put my finger on it. The powerful set of actresses in this movie’s cast, I feel, were underutilized.

Bhakthajanangalude Sradhakku

Interesting plot. Kavya has come back. But the rest? Meh. Chithra’s playback singing was noticeable in this movie.

Orma Mathram

It was refreshing to see Dileep in a serious role. He is a very versatile actor. The trouble with this flick was, for a movie with “orma” in its name, it was quite forgettable.

Snehaveedu

Mohanlal and Sheela. Sathyan Anthikad and Ilyaraja. Can you go wrong? You sure can – especially if you are trying to sell us a fusion of Manassinakkare and Rasathanthram!
