Two monks killed in Sri Lanka

Colombo, March 21 (IANS) Police were Wednesday investigating the overnight killing of two monks at a leading Buddhist temple in a suburb of capital Colombo.

Police spokesperson Ajith Rohana said the monks were from the Kotte Rajamahavihara temple. One died in the shrine while the other succumbed to injuries in hospital, reported Xinhua.

The victims were 80-year-old Pitigala Jinarathana and 60-year-old Borelesgamuwa Gunarathana.

The assailants had gone to the temple Tuesday night and asked for the chief priest. Unable to locate him, they went into a room where the two victims were.

The assailant escaped in a car.

The Kotte Rajamahavihara temple holds one of the biggest annual pageants in the island nation.
