Two Chhattisgarh cops killed in Maoist ambush

Raipur, Feb 9 (IANS) Two policemen were killed and two, including an Additional Superintendent of Police, seriously injured when Maoists ambushed a jeep carrying six personnel in Bastar region Thursday, an official said.

The police team came under attack in a forest in Pollampalli area of Sukma district, some 500 km south of Raipur.

“It was a well-executed ambush. Two of the six are killed and two, including Additional Superintendent of Police D.S. Marawi, are seriously injured,” Additional Director General (Maoist operations) Ramniwas told IANS.

He said the Maoists triggered a blast followed by gun attacks on the jeep. The attack took place when the policemen were returning after meeting with a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) team which is probing into an attack on social activist Swami Agnivesh who was allegedly assaulted by a mob in March last year.

The CBI probe is into the attack on instructions of the Supreme Court.

The policemen killed in the blast were accused along with Marawi for provoking the mob to carry out an assault on Agnivesh, and since then they were on the hit-list of the leftist insurgents.

Chhattisgarh’s mineral-rich Bastar region, which is made up of seven districts that includes Sukma, is considered a hotbed of the leftist rebels since late 1980s.
