Tripura opposes direct cash transfer
Agartala, Jan 2 (IANS) The Left Front government in Tripura Wednesday opposed the central government's direct cash transfer scheme saying banking was not available in most villages. "Only 102 bank branches are functioning in Tripura though it has 1,038 panchayats and village committees. The network is inadequate," Tripura Finance and PWD Minister Badal Chowdhury told reporters here.

TDP leader’s son wanted for attempt to murder in Andhra
Hyderabad, Jan 2 (IANS) The Andhra Pradesh Police Wednesday launched a manhunt for Paritala Sriram, son of a opposition Telugu Desam Party legislator, in a case relating to conspiracy to murder a Congress leader. Police in Anantapur town searched the house of Paritala Sunita, a TDP legislator and widow of slain former minister Paritala Ravi, in the early hours of Wednesday. Police parties also fanned out in various parts of Anantapur district, notorious for faction killings, looking for Sriram.
‘Situation being created to delay Pakistan polls’
Islamabad, Jan 2 (IANS) Jamiat Ulma-e-Islam (Fazl-ur-Rehman) (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazl-ur-Rehman has alleged that an attempt is being made to put off general elections due in Pakistan in February-March in the country. Rehman, while visiting a slain Awami National Party leader Bashir Bilour's residence to offer condolences Tuesday, told reporters that a law and order situation was being created to postpone elections in the country under a planned conspiracy. Toll in Syria civil war over 46,000: Opposition
Washington, Jan 1 (IANS) More than 46,000 people have died in Syria in the conflict between the forces of President Bashar al-Assad and the rebels, said an opposition group Tuesday. Of all people killed in the civil war, 85 percent of them -- 39,520 -- died in 2012, according to the opposition Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, CNN reported. In 2011, 6,548 lost their lives, representing 14 percent of the total 46,068 deaths.
