London, Aug 11 (IANS/RIA Novosti) Finland won bronze in the Elliot class sailing Saturday, beating Russia in a close third place race.
The Finnish crew of Silja Lehtinen, Silja Kanerva and Mikaela Wulff beat Russia 3-1 to third place in the match race event, a one-on-one competition between two boats that prizes tactical sailing above outright speed.
The turning point in the bronze medal match came in the third race when, with the scores poised at 1-1, Finland overtook Russia on the final stretch after the Russians had led round the first two marks.
Russia’s Ekaterina Skudina, Elena Siuzeva and Elena Oblova had earlier pulled off a surprise victory over Britain in the quarter-finals.
Australia and Spain will compete in the final later Saturday.
