Jairam hopes Akhilesh brings in good governance to UP

Hiware Bazar (Maharashtra), March 10 (IANS) Rural Development Minister Jairam Ramesh Saturday congratulated Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister-designate Akhilesh Yadav and hoped that his reign would bring in good governance in the state.

‘I congratulate my friend Akhilesh. He is an environmentalist. He met me very often when I was the environment minister. He has also studied in my home state Karnataka. I wish him all the best,’ Ramesh told reporters on the sidelines of an event here in Ahmed Nagar district.

Akhilesh Yadav, the parliamentarian son of Samajwadi Party (SP) chief and former chief minister Mulayam Singh Yadav, would be sworn in as chief minister March 15. His Samajwadi Party has a 224-seat majority in the 403-member assembly. At 38, Akhilesh Yadav would be the youngest chief minister of UP.

Ramesh said he expected the government led by Akhilesh to provide good governance in the state.

‘He (Akhilesh) may be a political adversary, but that is now immaterial. Now he has to provide good governance in Uttar Pradesh.’

Ramesh said his own party, the Indian National Congress which got a drubbing at the hustings, would play a constructive role as an opposition party.
