Tehran, July 28 (IANS) The Iranian police have seized over two tonnes of opium in the country’s Hormuzgan province on the rim of the Persian Gulf, Fars news agency reported Saturday.
“A vessel loaded with over two tonnes of drugs was seized in Hormuzgan province as a result of the efforts made by the provincial border guards and anti-drug squads (of the Iranian Law Enforcement Police),” Xinhua quoted Lt. Commander of the Iranian Border Guard unit Colonel Habibollah Mardanpour as saying.
Iran is located at the crossroad of the international drug smuggling route from Afghanistan, the world’s top opium producer, to Europe.
