Hungarian football club director commits suicide

Budapest, March 3 (IANS) Robert Kutasi, 48-year-old director of Hungarian football club REAC, has committed suicide, the club said.

The club, which is based in Budapest and plays in the second division of the Hungarian league, has come under scrutiny from Hungarian authorities for its links to a match-fixing scandal that has engulfed Hungarian football since December 2009.

On Tuesday, six current and former players for REAC, were taken into custody for questioning in connection with eight cases of suspected betting fraud. A further two are also suspected of involvement, Xinhua said.

A statement from Kutasi written just before he died Thursday appeared in the Friday edition of Nemzeti Sport, a leading daily sports newspaper.

“My life is over. What I fought for has come to nothing,” the statement read.

“This club has become beaten down by filth. What I worked for has been ruined by people that I trusted. I fought heavy weapons with a catapult and have come to realize now that I have lost.”
