Mizoram CM seeks Sonia’s help to tackle financial crisis

Aizawl, Feb 23 (IANS) Mizoram Chief Minister Lal Thanhawla has sought UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi's intervention to help the state tide over a financial crisis. Thanhawla held an hour-long meeting with Sonia Gandhi at her residence in New Delhi Friday and apprised her about the state's financial problems, an official of the chief minister's secretariat told reporters Saturday. The state government had earlier submitted a proposal to central government seeking Rs.500 crore for payment of increased salaries to its employees after the implementation of sixth pay commission recommendations.

Aizawl, Feb 15 (IANS) The number of foreigners visiting Mizoram is rising. A total of) 745 foreigners visited Mizoram last year, 87 more than in 2011, a Foreigners Regional Registration Office official told reporters. Of the 745, 138 were from the US, 104 from Britain and 78 from Australia.

Protected area rules’ relaxation extended in 3 northeastern states

Aizawl, Jan 25 (IANS) The Union home ministry has relaxed for another year the protected area rules in three northeastern states - Manipur, Mizoram and Nagaland - to allow foreign tourists to visit these states, an official said here Friday. "The Foreigners (Protected Areas) Order 1958 has been relaxed for one more year beyond Dec 31 last year to allow foreign tourists to visit the three northeastern states subject to certain conditions," a Mizoram government official told IANS. The rules were first relaxed in 2010 and this has been extended every year/ He said the central government relaxed the over five decades old rules to allow foreign tourists, except those from Afghanistan, China, Pakistan and Myanmar, in the three northeastern states.

13 die in Mizoram due to drug overdose

Aizawl, Jan 14 (IANS) At least 13 people, mostly youths and high school students, have died due to suspected drug overdose in less than a month in this Mizoram capital, officials said Monday. "Most of the people were brought unconscious with symptoms of drug overdose to the hospital where many of them died.
