Parents can encourage creativity of children in the areas of effortless communication, flexibility, redefinition and explanation. Helping the child to look, observe and speak the mind fearlessly matters a lot in nurturing creativity. It is very important to support the child to become self-sufficient and independent in order to face life confidently. Creative children are curious, flexible, playful, observant and free. The following are a few simple ways to encourage creative thinking in children by tapping their imagination.
- Help the child to make a scrap book: Allow the children to stick pictures, make illustrations and notes on anything that captures their mind. The child should be able to feel proud about the scrap book. Never insist that the pictures or materials put into the book have any specific pattern. Let the child follow his own imagination.
- Help the child to construct creative stories: The child can be guided to develop a story by providing him with an opening sentence. Let the child add a few more linking sentences using his own ideas. Let the child write down his thoughts on a paper. As the child grows up new ideas and illustrations will be developed and then new stories can be constructed. Binding together these pages with an attractive cover painted by the child himself will make a library of the child’s own books.
- Help the child to Experience natural phenomena: Any child will be thrilled to touch the waves of the sea and play with the wet sand. Even the chirping sounds of birds will be new to small children. The Rainbow on a clear sky can be another attraction. The twinkling stars or the full moon also will tap their imagination. Be patient to listen carefully when the child relates and explains the new wonders of these new observations using his own words. It is very important to ask a good number of interesting questions to the child at this stage to empower his ability to explain.
- Help the child to develop stories based on pictures: Assist the child to collect related pictures of a festival or event like birthdays. Let the child write his own story relating the various pictorial representations. This is a good activity to boost the child’s imagination and creativity.
Children are not born creative but they can be molded to express their innate creativity without any fear of getting teased. It is the parent’s duty to nurture the creativity of their children by initiating them into the realm of free thinking.
