Amman, Jan 31 (IANS) About $10 million were stolen from a vault of the Damascus-based International Bank for Trade and Finance (IBTF), a Jordanian bank said Thursday. Jordan's Housing Bank for Trade and Finance owns 49 percent in the IBTF, Xinhua reported. According to a disclosure on the website of the Amman Stock Exchange, the bank said around $3.4 million, 4.7 million euros and 33 million Syrian pounds were robbed from the bank in Syria Jan 17.

Syria not to use chemical weapons: Russia

Amman, Nov 6 (IANS/RIA Novosti) The Syrian authorities have assured Moscow that there will be no use of chemical weapons against rebel forces, Russia's foreign minister said Tuesday. "I rule out the use by the [Syrian] regime of chemical weapons," Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told journalists. "We have received the appropriate assurances." Lavrov said Russia had also asked Syria to make a similar pledge to western powers.

UAE to set up camp for Syrian refugees in Jordan

This was announced by Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, chairman of the Red Crescent Authority (RCA), Monday. "Humanitarian situation of Syrian refugees in Jordan is getting worse and we should move quickly to secure decent living along with medical and relief services especially to women and children," Sheikh Hamdan said during a tour of the UAE-Jordan Mobile Hospital. Jordan home to over 180,000 Syrian refugees

Amman, Sep 3 (IANS) The total number of Syrians who have fled unrest in their country and arrived in Jordan since early 2011 has exceeded 180,000, according to Jordan's Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh. According to state-run Petra news agency, at a meeting with British envoy to the Syrian opposition John Wilkes in Amman, the Jordanian minister reviewed the consequences of the Syrian crisis on Jordan. Judeh said Jordan will continue to provide services to the Syrians who fled their country into the Kingdom in the fields of health and education in spite of the difficult economic conditions the country is going through, Xinhua reported. The minister also called for international community's aid to help Jordan continue to be able to provide the Syrian refugees with assistance and services.

UAE helps Syrian girl get medical treatment

Amman, Aug 27 (IANS/WAM) Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, chairman of the UAE Red Crescent Authority, has ordered treatment of a four-month-old Syrian refugee girl who requires a bone marrow transplant following a disease. For the past few weeks, the baby girl's parents tried desperately to get her a life-saving treatment but were faced the problem of high expenses for the surgery. Sheikh Hamdan issued his directives to the UAE embassy in Amman to pay for the girl's surgery with bone marrow to be donated by one of her parents. --IANS/WAM sd
