Algiers, May 5 (IANS) Algerian security services have arrested a suspected Al Qaeda-linked militant carrying an explosive belt in Chlef province, a media report said. Citing Ennahar TV, Xinhua said the 23-year-old militant was intercepted near a bus station, and had likely planned to blow himself off. A security official said the suspect hails from Relizene province and is believed to belong to Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM)

Algiers, March 27 (IANS) The Algerian football team defeated Benin 3-1 in Group H qualifying matches for the World Cup 2014 to be held in Brazil. Feghouli (10th minute), Taider (60th), Slimani (90+2) scored for Algeria Tuesday while the sole goal of Benin was scored by Adeoti (26th). After beating Benin, the Desert Foxes share the top spot of Group H with Mali, who beat Rwanda 2-1 Sunday, reports Xinhua.

31 hostages killed in Algeria rescue operation
Algiers, Jan 19 (IANS) As many as 31 workers, including 19 foreign nationals, who were taken hostage by an armed group in a gas field in Algeria, have been killed since the beginning of the Algerian army's rescue operation, Xinhua reported Saturday. A source told Xinhua that nine militants were also killed, while three were arrested alive, since the army's Special Forces launched the operation Thursday at the Tinguentourine gas field.
